LERMOOS

Lermoos 1000m. together with Ehrwald and Biberwier are located in Austria evenly spaced around a swampy plain or Moos located at the foot of the Zugspitze 2962m which is the highest mountain in Germany. It is about 3km from one town to the other and the Moos has a number of groomed trails and walking tracks all over it.

The best access is from Innsbruck or Munich by train and bus and takes about one and a half hours

Lermoos is a compact and picturesque village. Most accommodation is within 5 minutes of the XC tracks and the town centre, that has all facilities except a pharmacy and plenty of restaurants. Medications that we take for granted in the supermarket such as aspirin and paracetamol can only be bought in a pharmacy and there is one in Ehrwald. The village of Ehrwald is more spread out and larger while Biberwier is quaintly remote but Lermoos is just right. Lermoos has a public indoor pool and ice skating rink. The village organises a flare lit toboggan ride down from the middle station once a week. Participants walk up and have a meal and a few grogs in a good party atmosphere at the restaurant and then ride their toboggans down the 3km steep and narrow track lit by flares. Toboggans can be hired, it is easy and quick to learn how to do it and it is a whole lot of fun. Everyone should take a trip up on the cable car to the top of the Zugspitz, nearly 2000m above the Moos, where there are fabulous views, restaurants and from where downhill skiers cross over into Germany and ski unbelievable slopes over an area of several square kilometres.

Skating and classic skiing tracks are set on the Moos and another 100km or more of classic tracks are on the generally level terrain towards Heiterwang, to Weissensee and to the Zugspitz Loipe. There is also a high level set of classic tracks accessed by riding up the chairlift to Ehrwalder Alm. There are some avalanche danger areas that may be closed after heavy snowfalls but most of the valley remains skiable. There are plenty of restaurants for snacks.

One of the best things about this area is that guests in the area can get free train travel over the 20km between  Ehrwald and Heiterwang and this allows skiers to ski one way and get the train for the other leg. The train is due to be replaced by a bus service and there are also several skiers buses that can be used  by any local guest.

Although Lermoos is at 1000m the snow is not always reliable around the towns but a short train or bus ride will usually find snow. It gets low temperatures but usually sunny days. It is an easy starting point for a trip and certainly worth a week before moving on to Seefeld for one or two weeks and then on to Engadin for another one or two weeks.

Contact the Lermoos Tourist Office at lermoos@netway.at or view their web page at www.tiscover.com/lermoos  and ask for accommodation close to the town centre if possible and that is 5 minutes level walk to the Moos trails. Lermoos has cheaper accommodation than Seefeld and the cost of eating out is reasonable. A visit to Konditorei Simon after skiing will fill you with good food without emptying your wallet and the ladies will love their cakes.
