LEUTASCH

Although close to Seefeld it has a totally different character and different ski trails. Leutasch is a district, not a town. It is situated in a valley and extends about one or two kilometres from Weidach which is the main commercial centre and the densest area of housing. The tourist office and another supermarket is located nearby at Kirchplatzl. There is a langlauf school and indoor swimming pool and sauna nearby. Most of the rest of the district is spread out over about 15km in klusters of houses along the roads. There is a 250m ski hill near Weidach that also has a toboggan run from the top of the chair lift.

Access is by bus from Seefeld station about ten times a day or taxi.

There are two main groomed ski trails. The Obern loop (pictured) is 12km long and has three classic tracks and a skating track groomed. The writer has seen 60 people ski past in one minute but there is no congestion as the trails are all one way and it is not that busy all the time. The trail is flatish with only gentle downhill sections that are only noticeable because they allow one to ski a little faster. The trail winds around farmlands and houses and passes several restaurants and a snack bar. The Unterleutasch loop is 22km long in the other direction, is one way but it is possible to cut across and double back if desired. It is almost imperceptibly downhill for 10km and the skier has to work a little bit harder on the return leg. A good choice of restaurants on the way and as the area is in a broad valley there are magnificent mountain backdrops in all directions that are constantly changing as you travel on. For dedicated skaters there is a hilly 3.5km loop at the most distant point of the Obern trail and the 10km Plaik trail offers 5km of uphill for classic skiers, some good views over the valley and a fun ski back down to Kirchplatzl.

There are no trail fees for skiers who are guests at either Leutasch or Seefeld. The one Seefeld trail map also covers the Leutasch trails. One of the best runs is from Seefeld to Buchen and then a fast but mostly safe downhill run to the Leutasch trails. Alternatively catch the bus from Seefeld at 9.30am and ski the Leutasch trails, have some lunch and a beer and get a bus back about 3pm.

The Buchen Katzenloch trail is a classical loop from Leutasch to Buchen and back or it is possible to ski to Seefeld and then back to Leutasch via Buchen or take the easy way by bus.

Contact the Leutasch Tourist Office at leutasch@netway.at  or view their web page at www.tiscover.com/leutasch  If bed and breakfast is wanted the Weidach area is best as there is a greater choice of restaurants for the evening meal. Having trouble getting a table?  Make a booking early in the day. From some locations supermarket shopping may be easier on skis than walking. Accommodation is available at many locations adjacent to the groomed trails.
