SEEFELD

Located 24 km by train NW from Innsbruck and 120km south of Munich airport by train. Trains run about every hour and a half and don’t be confused when the station sign is seen  “Seefeld in Tirol”

There is a public indoor swimming pool and saunas, casino, cross country centre with change room and showers, ice skating rink, cleared walking tracks, indoor sports facilities, six downhill ski areas and 200km of groomed XC tracks. Trail maps with track details are sold throughout the town. There is a free town bus. No trail fees for guests in the town. The variety and quality of the shops is the best outside the cities.

Seefeld hosted the Olympic Nordic events in 1964 and 1976 and the world championships in 1985. Seefeld is on a plateau at 1180m and most of the trails climb and undulate to just over 1300m. Most of the trails are for classic skiing and there is only a 3km loop on the flat and the balance is hilly. Skaters have the 3km flat loop and a 10km loop that has about 285m vertical difference. By taking a short bus ride to Wildmoos skaters can ski a 8.5km loop with a 120m vertical difference. The trails pass by at least six restaurants. Some skiing is on forest trails but there are several points where magnificent mountain views can be had. Every trail has it’s own distinctive character. On most days 20 to 30km will be skied and with the right wax it is possible for a good skier to cover 50km with 1000m of vertical difference.

The trails require intermediate skiing skills. Seefeld is most enjoyable when light snowfalls keep the trails fresh. Because of the thousands of people who ski the area the trails can get worn out with a bit of grass showing as soon as the weather gets warm. In spite of the number of people there is no sense of overcrowding and nearly all the trails are one way. One week is hardly long enough to ski all the trails so two weeks makes for a good holiday. One of the most enjoyable trails is the Scharnitz track that starts in the centre of town just behind the ski school meeting place. After going up and over the ski school hill it is a great downhill run for 4km through a forest trail followed by 6km of gentle downhill to Scharnitz where there are restaurants and it is possible to get the train back to Seefeld. Expect to take 45 minutes from Seefeld and the return trip over a different track for half the distance takes about 2 hours. On the way there is light entertainment watching the Audi driver training school teaching driving on ice as well as great mountain views.

This photo of Mosern, 5km on the trail from Seefeld shows how the snow can disappear even at this level. The Inn Valley at 500m is in the distant left and completely devoid of snow. Most of the trails are located where snow is retained.

see also Leutasch about 7km away as it is linked to Seefeld by ski trails and this allows classical skiers to cover more trails or if skating is wanted, travel to Leutasch by bus.
